An expert witness is a witness, whom by virtue of education, profession, publication or experience, is believed to have special knowledge of their subject beyond that of an average person, sufficient that others may officially and legally rely on the expert witness’ opinion.
Typically, expert witnesses are relied on by both sides of a legal case to dispute opinions on many subjects. Therefore, good expert witness testimony can make all the difference in commercial litigation. HazRes offers litigation support in legal cases in the form of expert witnesses, having had much international experience in this field. The incident (either accidental and intentional) investigations and litigation support cases we handle vary in magnitude, complexity, breadth and duration ranging from small fire and explosion incidents up to large multi-fatality catastrophes at industrial facilities throughout the world.
HazRes specialises in the areas of fire, explosion and toxic incident investigations only, and we do not investigate other types of incident unless they are associated with our core business activities and competencies. HazRes’ team of consultants have substantial experience in incident investigation and litigation support internationally and will respond rapidly to incidents assigned wherever they are located.
As many incident investigations cross several academic disciplines due to their complexity, HazRes’ team of consultants are highly qualified academically in combustion and explosion science, and other mainstream scientific and engineering disciplines such as chemistry, civil, electrical, mechanical and process engineering. Any disciplines that are required to complete the incident investigation, expert witness or other litigation support services that are not catered for within HazRes will be supplied by our extensive network of experienced and competent associates.

As we are a “knowledge based” organisation we have an extensive and unique paper and electronically based data libraries on work undertaken over the last century in many fields associated with combustion and explosion science, loss prevention, accidents and other related disciplines.
HazRes also operates two different scale testing facilities here in the UK. We do not contract out our testing services or have multiple use facilities, which require permission to conduct testing. HazRes has extensive experience in conducting experimental testing on a bespoke and ad hoc basis for litigation support.
HazRes’ consultants are also experienced in analytical and modelling techniques, which is the main core of our work for risk assessments and consequence analysis and include such aspects as gas dispersion, fluid flow, high energy release (e.g. Vapour Cloud Explosions, Bursting Pressure Vessels, Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosions, High Explosive etc) and structural modelling. These analytical and modelling techniques in combination with our experimental testing expertise have provided strong evidence for expert witness testimonies, previously.
